What If…

What if I told you!

I don’t really know what I’m doing?

What if I told you I’m giving it a shot?

What if I’m not the person you ought to meet?

What if all I say is things I’m not sure of?

What if I’m not the person you thought I were?

What if it sucks being around me?

What if I hate the fact that I don’t know what you’re thinking ?

What if I don’t care about what people think about me including you?

What if what I’m typing isn’t making sense?

What if you make no sense too ? The fact that you’ve read up to here…

The truth is, This happens all the time, But guess what… we move on regardless…

What if I asked you to be my friend “just”…?

I’m sure your answer is yes,

Right…?

You are Not an Expert.

We often position our selves as experts in particular things that we do, which we are__ to some extent, But not… it’s a lie.

That way, Even when you mess up a little bit, the other party will be considerate as opposed to someone positioning them selves as experts… A tiny mess up is termed as failure …

I can’t either say I’m very good at writing, or very good at design which I am. But, I would rather say__ I’m not that expert you may think of me. It’s safer or even better “cooler” to say, I’m doing the best I can.

I say it’s safer because, people often have lots of expectations of what you told them you’re an expert at... Letting them know you’re doing you’re best kinda lowers that, and they get the best of what you can do. Sounds like a win win

It’s not a good thing to position you’re self as an expert at your initial stages in something, because, The truth is… you’re starting up too, and you have done you’re research well, but there people in market already, who have experience and have experimented most of the theories that you have in mind as an “expert” starting…

Now with a mentality of “I’m an expert”, you won’t stand any chance of getting help from them.

Launching a new product or service as an expert most times comes with a familiarity of not letting people know you’re a new product or service provider… at times…

Now this will make your would be clients to compare you with already existing competitors, and if you’re a startup my friend, chances are?… they will prefer something they have seen already on market. As opposed to you.

The best way of hitting market with your product or service is by letting the people you want to serve know you’re there. You’re starting out and giving them the expectation of good things that will come there way when they join you.

Don’t be that expert, Do your best and master your craft. I’m doing so with writing, and the best part is, I’m not being an expert at it.

As I conclude, a kind reminder… Mistakes are for making corrections…

I hope this was fine, Let me know in the comments below.

Thank you.

Greetings…

Not sure if I even have the right heading for this blog post, But hey “Not something to worry about”, I start with a greeting and then a brief introduction… Lemme do a brief one real quick…

Good morning, Good afternoon, Good evening, Depending on location and time you’re reading this from, I’m Jonathan Lester Kibumba, A creative Graphics Animator, Nice to meet you… I’m actually done, “Sounds Virtual”.you can also introduce yourself in comments so that we get to know each other…

Well, I’m a creative graphics animator because it’s a position and title I hold currently in a media house where I’m working currently, I like calling myself a Visual Artist… A quick way to say I sketch, design, do Photography, Animation, to mention but a few… it’s been interesting and I like my job as I at least have to do something at least on every single day, Something different.

Something different but the same, It gets boring on some occasions as some stuff don’t change but, “those are minimal though”, I would like to share how I create some few things and I would like to start with a #Logo particularly, Starting with sketches or even diving right in into software then make a sketch later… Well, This wasn’t intended to be a long post and I’m concluding it already, I will add all the details about the process of creating a logo in the next write up…

Thanks for making time to read through this, Share it incase you would like someone else to find it and please Feel free to hit me up in comments if interested and I shall respond accordingly.

Otherwise, Greetings…

START…

Starting can be hard, complicated but it can really be simple…

Most times what prevents one from starting is the thought of requirements (as they term them) needed to start. It takes lots of work, research and resources to start most ventures, lucky for the creatives… what they mostly need for starters is the knowledge and skills (say ability) to create things… Resources are also a must have for us too, could be a good camera, Computer, Brushes and color depending on the kind of work you create. It shouldn’t be a barrier to start though, the know how is the basis and key to start. Just like how I started blogging, had thought and thought about it way before I published my first blog and all I had in mind that stopped me from starting was the impression I would get from my would be readers… Questions like… what if I’m not good enough?, what if they don’t like it?, what if it doesn’t work out?… Well, it could all go wrong, as much as it could go right and here I am now…

The thing is, what we do, study, create doesn’t really define what persons we are… Because if I start and it doesn’t work out, that has nothing to do with me, I get to do other things if one doesn’t work out as expected… Because at the end of the day, what we do isn’t for ourselves, but rather for the people ( clients & customers ), and once they are satisfied with what you’re offering, they will ask for more… if they are not interested… “You know the answer to that right”… and it’s okay…

For the case of a product based venture, lots of things have to be figured out… things like space of operation which may call for rent, capital to stock product, labour to operate, and a few more other things, this gets overwhelming and may take long to put together… Good news is, you don’t need to put all these together to start. What you need is to let people know you’re going to provide them with that particular product you claim you want to provide… “Start small, but with a big venture mindset”…

The Best Way To Start…

Launching a venture is so simple if you atleast know a few of the things I’m going to state below, Money isn’t part of them if you’re wondering... I’m not ignoring it though, But yeah I’m excluding it from the equation for now…

Qn.1… What do you want to do? Be specific with a particular service or product that you wish to provide. Qn.2… Who are you doing it for? Identify the kind of people that are going to be your clients or customers… Qn.3… Where are these people ( The would be clients / customers ) where do they spend their time, which social media platforms do they use… things like those… Qn.4… How can I provide service or deliver products to these people… Your venture is ready to launch already now, Meanwhile these can be arranged the way you want…

It can be summarised as What?… For Who?… Where?… and finally How?… If there’s another way you think one can start, Feel free to hit me up in the comments below, It will be helpful…

They Miss You Too…

Well, I will start by saying… I called her, I called him. And I was really thinking about Her, Like a lot… Him too.

It all started with a call from him (Joel), And he was asking how long I had taken without calling her? I replied, Quite a while… But her phone is sometimes off and not reachable whenever I call her, Joel continued…

She feels like you’re taking long long to check on her, all she wants is to hear from you, You should really make sure you check in, She’s worried.

Okay bro, I replied… It’s just that sometimes I get to call when it’s late in the night, But I will call… and he hang up.

Following morning at around 10.00am, Made the first attempt … It went through to a missed call, Moved out for a little bit and found she had called back and I didn’t pick, called back and as luck would have it, She picked…

Hello how are you Mum, It’s been quite a while and I’ve been thinking about you, I miss you;… I miss you, We miss you too here too when are you coming home I hope everything is fine with you… “In her voice”.

I’m good, everything is fine, just haven’t got time to passby home to say Hi. Well, you can always call I wonder why you’re taking long to check on us, Gets me wondering If you’re fine there, I asked your big brother Joel too.

We talked for a while and I got to find out that it wasn’t I only missing her, She actually did miss me too, And the excuse I was giving for not calling was time, and having no credit on phone, Yet in actual sense I’m not being financially fine, And being silent is one of my things when I’m struggling with funds…

In the course of the conversation, She highlighted, ” It’s okay if you don’t have money, Money will come but check on the people you left home because they believe in you and they know you’re trying your best to make ends meet.

Ignoring them may let them think you’re on your own course and that you think they can’t be of any help to your success which is wrong. After this call, I was happy, Got relieved of all that was on my mind…

Called Dad next, We didn’t talk much, He seemed to miss me and quite surprised me calling, He usually does the calling somehow… But yes, I called and what we exchanged was amazing.

Lesson…

If you still have parents, guardian or siblings, Give them a call once in a while, You may think you don’t want to give them headache by calling them, Which you might… But not in this case. They miss you too, they want to feel present in your life, and please do not deny them that.

Joel sounded like… Like I don’t make calls, Not to Mum or Dad,… And yeah he had a point. We often call when we want something from them, Favours about stuff and things like that, Dad had told Joel how surprised he was finding a missed call from me, “wow so challenging..”. Don’t be the person that calls people only when you want something from them, They will be like… Oooops, He has called… Check in once in a while to say Hi.

Start Small, But With A Big Venture Mindset

To pursue what you want, you need a lot of things and often support informs of technical, physical to mention but a few. Good news is, you don’t have to know everything.

The purpose of starting small is because you really need to start in the first place, You can always adjust according to how the industry and conditions are on the move.

Why do this?

  • Because it will give you courage to aim higher and know which step to take next, Where to rectify.
  • You will have a living example to apply all the new knowledge that you’re learning, and making deductions if you’re moving in the right direction.

I applied it on a services venture that I started out of recent, link twitter.com/UnderWearsUg and I literally don’t know everything about Underwear but I know what I wanted to venture in, Had to launch it, Started off with a twitter account, then created a facebook & instagram later after someone asked about.

I can’t say it’s moving on well, but the results are convincing.

Why I Do What I Do?

I still have a part of me that believes that writers’ bloc exist, But I literally lost it after watching an interview where Seth Godin nullified the whole idea of writer’s block…

He blogs everyday, Sounds like too much but He continued by saying he blogs everyday because it is a new day, Not because he has too.

I picked that, and strongly believe people don’t really care if you had issues after failing to meet the deadline. Just like how teachers attend everyday to teach students in class regardless of how they are feeling, I make sure I create something, Be it a sketch, A logo or something to make sure I deliver what was asked of me.

Some days are just bad ones, You can wake up and feel like not doing anything, But on days like those, I do lots of sketches that end up changing when I open software, I literally do a totally different thing there, but the sketches help me build it up and points me in certain directions.

I’m learning to also create something regardless of the situation not because I have too, But because its a new thing I will be creating…

Perfectionist Or You can explain?

Being a perfectionist is good, Sounds cool but yet very dangerous… I’ve come to find it being a luxury. It’s very dangerous to be a perfectionist as a creative person. Comes with lots of strings attached.

Strings that include?

  • Not delivering on time. ___Often as a perfectionist, you will make sure everything is right, Be it color, proportion, Alignment… Somehow, It won’t come out as expected and If you’re a perfectionist, focus will be on rectifying what you think went wrong instead of focusing on what you did right & what the client or the owner of the final produce wants.
  • Seeking for approval. ___This reduces you’re self esteem as a designer as a creative person, because we often tend to ask for approval of what people think of what we have created like we don’t believe creation we made is good. What ever…
